Background of the Study
Sex education in secondary schools is a subject of ongoing debate, reflecting diverse cultural, social, and educational perspectives. In Ibadan South-West Local Government Area, Oyo State, students’ perceptions of sex education influence their understanding of reproductive health, personal relationships, and social responsibility (Akinyemi, 2023). With increasing globalization and exposure to varied cultural norms, students are faced with conflicting messages regarding sexuality and health. Recent research suggests that comprehensive sex education can lead to improved health outcomes and responsible behaviors (Ajayi, 2024). However, cultural taboos and inadequate curricular content often lead to misconceptions and resistance among students (Balogun, 2025). This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of sex education, analyze the factors that shape these views, and determine how effective programs can be designed to meet both educational and cultural needs.
Statement of the Problem
There is a notable discrepancy in how sex education is perceived among secondary school students in Ibadan South-West, with many expressing discomfort and confusion due to inadequate or culturally insensitive teaching methods (Akinyemi, 2023). This inadequacy leads to misinformation and potential health risks. The challenge is to balance educational content with cultural sensitivities to provide effective sex education. This study seeks to identify the factors influencing these perceptions and determine how curriculum reforms can address the shortcomings, thereby improving students’ understanding of reproductive health and social responsibility.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into students’ perceptions of sex education, which is crucial for developing effective and culturally sensitive curricula. The findings will benefit educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers by identifying gaps in current programs and suggesting improvements. Enhanced sex education can lead to better health outcomes and informed decision-making among students.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining students’ perceptions of sex education in secondary schools within Ibadan South-West Local Government Area, Oyo State. It does not extend to primary schools or other regions.
